Les Nouvelles
Esthétiques
South African Body Art Championships 2005

Make-up has always had a sense of mystery behind it, having the
ability to evoke beauty or transform it. And as much as the body has
always been a canvas dating back to ancient civilizations such as
the Egyptians, Red Indians or Japanese, many people are not familiar
with transforming ones entire body into a complete work of art.
Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Annual International Congress and
Exhibition hosts the “Olypiades de Maquillage” where each of the Les
Nouvelles Esthetiques countries enters a contestant. Les Nouvelles
Esthetiques internationally has had a long history of appreciating
this exceptional art form, and Les Nouvelles Esthetiques South
Africa has subsequently introduced the inaugural South African Body
Art Championships in honour of this unique and highly specialized
skill. This event will become part of the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques
annual calendar.
Pioneering the way in the Make-up and Beauty Industry, Les Nouvelles
Esthetiques South Africa in association with Les Nouvelles Paris,
hosted South Africa’s first ever Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Body Art
Championships. The theme was Ancient Civilizations and preliminary
selection took place at the Sandton Convention Centre in
Johannesburg on the 16th of July 2005, as part of the Beauty Africa
Exhibition. Individuals and judges alike were amazed at the
exceptional work produced, from which 12-body art finalists, which
were selected out of 34 artists in the preliminary selection.
Original number of entrant: 64.
The
finals took place at the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Gala Dinner
hosted at the Hilton Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg on the 17th of
July 2005. The room was transported back to the days of old as the
canvases came to life on stage. Congratulations to the winner,
Robert James Manthe who’s ‘Eyes of Medussa’ hypnotized the crowd.
Robert will be the first ever contestant from South Africa to
compete in Paris in the International Body Art Championships, and is
also invited to attend the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Paris Congress,
which provides an insight and inspiration to the Make-up, Health and
Beauty Industry. Wilna Bronkhorst, was selected as runner-up for her
‘Tibet/Green Tara’ and will represent South Africa should Robert be
unable to attend the Championships in Paris.
Les Nouvelles Esthetiques would like to congratulate all the Body
Art Finalists, and wishes Robert the best of luck in Paris in 2006.
We would also like to thank our valued sponsors: Face to Face for
the coordination of the Championship, Services Seta for sponsoring
all flight and travel costs for the winner to compete in Paris,
Kaleidoscope Cosmetics for providing the Make-up for the event,
Su-Do for donating an airbrushing kit to the value of R 5040 as the
prize for the runner-up. Special mention must be made of Anesi, Moor
Life and Africology who donated a prize for the best model.

Robert
James Manthe is driven by his passion for design. After
matriculating from King Edward VII – Johannesburg, Robert went
on to Face to Face Beauty and Make-up Design School, where he
studied Prosthetics and Special Effects. He teaches at the
Face to Face Beauty and Make-up Design School and loves the
skillfulness behind body art. Robert has produced body art for
some major brands, including that of Angel Perfume by Tierry
Muggler, Austrian Airlines, Nandos Chicken, An African Game
Lodge and Honda to name a few. He is currently in his final
year at Vega Brand Communication School studying BA in Multi
Media. Being the talented designer that he is, Robert
illustrates and designs websites, interactive DVD’s and
animations. Far from your average 26 year old, Robert’s
ability to create and design shines through, as he recently
won the inaugural Les Nouvelles Esthetiques South African Body
Art Championships. He painted his sister Nicole Manthe as
Medusa and mesmerized the audience. Robert will go on to
represent South Africa in the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques
International Body Art Championships, Paris in 2006. This will
not be the first time that Robert has represented South Africa
as he went to Japan in 2003, to play in the South African
Touch Rugby Team. Achievements aside, we are glad to see that
Robert is following the footsteps of his mother, Shirley
Wenman - Principle of Face to Face, who won the World Body
Painting competition in London 23 years ago.
