Santé takes on a ground-breaking initiative to train visually impaired masseurs.

The sense of touch is one of our most powerful senses, which was most certainly acknowledged when Santé Winelands Hotel & Wellness Centre launched Project Magic Hands.

This phenomenal initiative equips visually impaired individuals to enter the Wellness industry as trained masseurs. Three young massage therapists recently received their qualifications due to the collaboration of Santé Winelands Hotel & Wellness Centre (a business unit of the Fidentia Group); the Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired in Worcester; and the Isa Carstens Health & Skincare Academy in Stellenbosch, who joined forces to create a highly specialised training programme for the visually impaired masseurs.

This visionary idea, including the translation of the syllabus into Braille, is the brainchild of Dr Geraldine Mitton, Medical Director of the Santé Wellness Centre, who currently has a visually impaired masseuse employed as part of the Wellness Centre's staff.

When asked about Project Magic Hands, Dr Mitton says: "Our aim is to provide accessible training leading to employment for the visually impaired within the Wellness industry. The idea was born during a previous visit to China where visually impaired masseurs are employed in hospitals and also offer a service to the public. It is my observation that, being visually impaired uniquely enables these individuals to 'tune in' via other senses, particularly on a tactile level. My impression is that this disability enables one to develop a kind of 'sixth sense' if you will, that is ideally suited to this profession."
